If you’ve spent time exploring the walkable streets and buzzing businesses of Wheeler District, you may have noticed a few fresh pops of green tucked into one of our alleyways. These aren’t just new additions—they’re part of a bigger movement. We’re proud to team up with Fertile Ground Cooperative, a local sustainability champion, to bring community composting bins to South Oklahoma City. It’s a small but powerful step toward a cleaner, greener future for all who live, work, and play here.
Meet Fertile Ground
Fertile Ground Cooperative is a local, worker-owned organization on a mission to make sustainability second nature across central Oklahoma. Specializing in composting and recycling services, they work to divert waste from landfills—particularly in high-traffic areas like restaurants, cafes, and commercial hubs. Their hands-on, community-driven approach perfectly aligns with one of our guiding principles here at Wheeler District: to create a place where sustainable living is accessible, easy, and part of everyday life for residents, business owners, and visitors alike.
How It Works
Located in the alley behind The Big Friendly, you’ll now find two bright green compost bins—your new go-to spot for giving food waste a second life. Getting started is simple: just scan the QR code on the bin, watch a quick how-to video, and use the provided code to unlock the lid. From there, toss in your compostable items and know that even the smallest scraps—coffee grounds, veggie peels, or sandwich crusts—are helping build a more sustainable, connected community right here in Wheeler.
Building a Greener Community
Sustainability starts with small, everyday choices, and now it is easier than ever to make a difference right here in Wheeler District. When you’re grabbing your morning coffee from Clarity Coffee or winding down with a beer at The Big Friendly, add an extra stop to your weekly routine and drop off your compost on the way. Whether it is used coffee grounds or leftover lunch scraps, composting helps keep waste out of landfills and gives it a new life as something good for the planet.
Swing by the Wheeler District Farmers Market every Friday through October from 6PM to 9PM to shop local and help build a greener community. While you’re there, don’t forget to toss any leftover food scraps into the Fertile Ground compost bin!
This is more than just a few compost bins – it’s a simple way for all of us to take better care of our neighborhood and make a lasting impact. Every little bit counts, and together we’re making Wheeler District a cleaner, greener place for everyone to enjoy.
Let’s keep it going, one compost toss at a time!
